How It's Measured
Release Timing
A release is dated by the first commit to the Claude Code changelog that contains its version heading, in UTC. That is when the notes went public, not the npm publish time, and GitHub Releases lists only a few versions, so dates from other sources can differ by hours or days.
Change Types
A change is one line of a release's notes. Its type comes from its leading verb, after any prefix such as "VSCode:", with the same classifier as the version pages, so the counts match. A line without a known verb counts as Other.
2025 vs 2026
Until Jan 1, 2026 the changelog rolled fixes into summary lines, so releases list 3.7 changes on average, against 30.4 since. Release counts compare across the whole history; change counts, sizes and fix share don't, so earlier periods are shaded and the change mix and developer focus start in 2026.
Developer Focus
A change counts toward an area when it names it, for example VS Code, MCP or Bedrock, using the tags of the version pages' Ecosystem Impact chips. One change can name several areas, so the shares of a month can add up to more than 100%.
Issue Counts
Issues in anthropics/claude-code only, without pull requests, from GitHub search. Opened counts use the creation date and closed counts the closing date, for any reason including duplicates, counted separately, so reopened issues aren't followed. Daily counts start Feb 24, 2025.
Silent Edits
A silent edit is a changelog line added to or removed from a version's notes after they first appeared, counted on the day it was detected. A reworded line counts as one line removed and one added. Each one is listed in the Silent Edits feed.
Model Launches
Markers show Claude model launches from Anthropic's announcements, curated by hand. They are timing context only: the page doesn't claim a launch caused any change in the numbers.
Snapshot
The data is rebuilt with every release and once a day after the issue refresh. All dates are UTC and weeks start Monday. Periods cut short by the range or the latest data are faded and marked partial. This snapshot covers releases through Oct 31, 2026 and issues through Nov 2, 2026.
